Engineering Intern – Process & Manufacturing (6-months)

Department: Engineering / Manufacturing

Reports To: Process Engineer / Plant Manager

Location: Easthampton MA (on-site)

Pay range: $20-25/hour

Position Summary:

The Engineering Intern will support process improvement, equipment optimization, and production efficiency initiatives across coating, converting, and adhesive manufacturing operations. This position offers hands-on exposure to advanced systems such as roll-to-roll coating lines, Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs), Hot Melt Coater, Process Ovens, Slitters, Corona Treaters, and Winders.

The intern will collaborate with process engineers to collect process data, perform technical analysis, and assist in improvement projects that enhance product quality, yield, and operational reliability. This internship provides valuable experience applying Lean and Six Sigma methodologies and participating in process optimization initiatives within a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in troubleshooting and optimizing production processes across coating, converting, and adhesive operations.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product consistency.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) using methods such as 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, and FMEA.
  • Collect and analyze process data to calculate yield, throughput, downtime, and cycle time metrics.
  • Support the creation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions for production equipment.
  • Participate in plant layout design and workflow optimization for new or modified process lines.
  • Assist in installation, commissioning, and startup of new Hot Melt Coating lines and related equipment.
  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality teams to implement process improvements and monitor results.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and data summaries to communicate project progress and outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing or recently completed a B.S. in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in manufacturing process improvement.
  • Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, and Root Cause Analysis principles (coursework or Green Belt training preferred).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and data analysis techniques.
  • Basic understanding of heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • AutoCAD – for plant layout and equipment design.
  • Excel VBA – for SOP’s and Data analysis.
  • Minitab – for process capability and product testing.
  • Experience with data logging or PLC systems (a plus).
  • Understanding of industrial sensors, instrumentation, and process controls.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Hands-on experience with roll-to-roll coating, Hot Melt Adhesive Coating, and converting operations.
  • Practical application of Lean and Six Sigma methods in real manufacturing settings.
  • Exposure to Root Cause Analysis and continuous improvement processes.
  • Development of technical documentation such as SOPs and Work Instructions.
  • Collaboration with experienced process engineers on equipment commissioning and process optimization.
  • Contribution to projects that directly improve productivity, cost efficiency, and sustainability.
